The Commercial Risk Is Different From the Health Risk

If you use treated seed at home, the only people eating it are yours. Sell fifty subscription boxes a week, or supply a restaurant doing twenty covers a night, and you are feeding people who never made that choice and have no way of checking.

That is not only a moral difference. Under India's Food Safety and Standards Act you are responsible for what you sell, including things you bought rather than made. If the seed was treated, that is your problem, not your supplier's.

The reason is simple enough. Fungicide coatings are made for crops that sit in soil for months, get rained on, and are usually cooked before anyone eats them. Your microgreens are cut seven to fourteen days after sowing and eaten raw, whole, and often unwashed. Nothing in that timeline gives the coating a chance to break down.

FSSAI Registration and What Inspectors Actually Ask

Any microgreen operation selling commercially in India needs FSSAI registration. Basic Registration covers turnover under ₹12 lakh at ₹100 a year; a State Licence applies above that at ₹2,000 to ₹5,000.

Nobody asks you to prove your seed is untreated when you register. What registration does is put you under the Act, and that means an inspector can ask how you know your inputs are safe.

If you have a supplier invoice, a certification reference and a germination figure, that is a thirty-second answer. If you have been buying loose seed from a nursery down the road, you have no answer at all.

If the compliance argument leaves you cold, this is the one that tends to land. It is about money, not principle.

Most growers shop on price per kilo. That is the wrong number. What you actually pay is cost per usable tray, and germination rate decides it.

On seed alone, the cheap option still wins. It stops winning the moment you count a failed tray properly — the cocopeat, ten days of a rack slot doing nothing, the hour you already spent sowing and watering it, and the delivery you now cannot make.

Consistency Is What Buyers Actually Buy

Chefs do not reorder because you impressed them once. They reorder because Tuesday's delivery looks like last Tuesday's.

You cannot promise that on seed you have not tested. One batch comes up at 95 percent, the next at 70, and suddenly your yield has moved by a quarter. Either the delivery shrinks or your margin does, and neither makes for a good phone call.

Tested seed takes one variable off the table. You still have heat, humidity, water and your own mistakes to manage. The seed does not need to be on that list.

How to Verify a Seed Supplier

Ask more than you would as a hobbyist. A good supplier will not mind.

Ask for the germination figure of the specific batch, not a general claim. A supplier who tests will have it. One who does not will say something vague about high quality.

Ask whether the seed is treated. The answer should be immediate and unambiguous. Hesitation, or a redirect to how clean their facility is, tells you what you need to know.

Ask what the seed was grown for. Seed produced for field vegetable planting is a different product from seed produced for microgreen use, even when it is the same species and untreated.

Ask for organic certification if you intend to market as organic. NPOP is India's national standard. Claiming organic without it is a labelling risk, not merely a marketing one.

Treated seed is usually, though not always, visually obvious.

Bright artificial colouring is the clearest signal. Vivid pink, red, blue or purple dye is applied deliberately so that treated seed is not mistaken for food or animal feed. That colour is a warning label, not a variety characteristic.

A powdery or waxy coating that comes off on your fingers is another sign. So is a chemical smell distinct from the earthy smell of clean seed.

The difficulty is that not all treatments are dyed, and unlabelled seed bought loose from a nursery gives you nothing to inspect. That is the practical reason commercial growers buy from suppliers who state the position in writing rather than assessing seed by eye.

Storage and Batch Records at Commercial Volume

Buying untreated seed is the start; keeping it usable is the rest.

Decant bulk seed into working quantities rather than opening a five kilogram sack weekly, since every opening exposes the whole batch to humid air. Label each container with variety, batch and the date it was opened.

Record the germination figure you were given and the rate you actually observe. A batch performing below its stated figure is information worth having before it costs you a delivery, and it is the kind of record an auditor or a serious buyer will be pleased to see.

Rotate oldest first. This sounds obvious and is routinely neglected once three or four batches are open at once.

Treated seed is normal and appropriate for field agriculture. A wheat or cotton crop is sown into open soil, faces months of pathogen pressure, and is harvested and processed long after any coating has broken down. The treatment exists for good reasons and the exposure route is entirely different.

The problem is specific to microgreens and sprouts: a seven to fourteen day cycle, no soil weathering, no processing, no cooking, and the seedling eaten whole. There is simply no stage at which the coating stops being present.

So the argument is not that seed treatment is bad. It is that field seed is the wrong input for this crop, in the same way that field-grade fertiliser assumptions do not transfer to a tray on a rack.

Building It Into Your Supplier Terms

Growers scaling past twenty or thirty trays a week should put this in writing rather than relying on an understanding.

Ask your supplier to confirm, on the invoice or in writing, that the seed supplied is untreated and food grade. Reputable suppliers will do this without hesitation because it is simply true of their product.

Specify the varieties and batch sizes you expect, so that a substitution during a supply gap is a conversation rather than a surprise. Substitutions are where treated seed most often enters an otherwise careful operation.

Agree what happens if a batch underperforms its stated germination figure. This does not need to be adversarial; a supplier who tests will usually replace or credit a batch that fails, because they would rather know.

Keep the invoices. They are the traceability record that an FSSAI inspection or a buyer audit will ask for, and reconstructing them afterwards is not possible.
