Organic Green Gram Seeds

Organic green gram (moong) seeds for growing crisp, protein-rich microgreens and sprouts at home. One of the fastest crops you can grow — sprouts in 2–3 days, microgreen shoots in 6–8 days. Germination rate: 90%+. Non-GMO, untreated, no chemical coating. 100g pack. Toss through salads, chaat, poha and stir-fries. Delivered across Pune.

₹69 / 100g

Health Benefits

  • High in plant protein — moong sprouts carry roughly 3g protein per 100g of fresh shoots
  • Sprouting raises vitamin C and folate levels well above those of the dry seed
  • Good source of iron, magnesium and dietary fibre for everyday Indian meals
  • Non-GMO, untreated green gram seed with no chemical fungicide coating

How to Grow

  1. Soak green gram seeds in clean water for 8–10 hours, then drain thoroughly
  2. For sprouts: keep in a covered jar or muslin cloth, rinsing twice daily for 2–3 days
  3. For microgreens: spread the drained seed on moist cocopeat and blackout for 3 days
  4. Harvest shoots at 6–8 days when the stems are 5–8 cm and the first leaves open

Germination tips for microgreens

  • Green gram is one of the most forgiving seeds for beginners — expect 90%+ germination without any special equipment.
  • Soak for 8–10 hours only. Over-soaking past 12 hours in Pune summer heat turns the seed sour and slimy.
  • Rinse and drain twice a day. Standing water is the single biggest cause of failed moong batches in Indian humidity.
  • Sow thinly for microgreens — green gram seed swells to nearly double its dry volume and a dense mat traps moisture.
  • Keep the tray between 20–30°C. Moong germinates happily at normal Indian room temperature, no heat mat needed.
  • During the monsoon, run a fan near the tray for a few hours daily to keep air moving over the crop.
  • Blackout for only 3 days — longer produces pale, leggy shoots that flop over once uncovered.
  • Harvest sprouts at 2–3 days for crunch, or grow on to 6–8 days for green-leaved shoots with a sweeter, nuttier taste.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do green gram seeds take to sprout?

Green gram (moong) sprouts in 2-3 days after an 8-10 hour soak, making it one of the fastest crops you can grow at home. If you want microgreen shoots with open leaves instead of short sprouts, grow on to 6-8 days on cocopeat.

Do I need to soak green gram seeds before sprouting?

Yes. Soak green gram seeds in clean water for 8-10 hours, then drain thoroughly. Do not soak beyond 12 hours in Pune summer heat — the seed turns sour and slimy, and germination drops sharply.

Why do my moong sprouts smell bad or turn slimy?

Almost always trapped water. Rinse and drain twice a day and let the jar or tray sit tilted so water runs out completely. Standing water is the main cause of failed moong batches in Indian humidity, especially during the monsoon.

Are these green gram seeds treated with chemicals?

No. SAGreens green gram seed is untreated and non-GMO, with no fungicide coating. Seed sold for agricultural sowing is often chemically treated and is not safe to sprout and eat — always check before buying moong for sprouting.

What is the difference between moong sprouts and green gram microgreens?

Sprouts are harvested at 2-3 days and eaten whole — seed, root and all — with a crunchy texture. Microgreens are grown on soil or cocopeat for 6-8 days and cut above the root, giving green-leaved shoots with a sweeter, nuttier taste.

How much does 100g of organic green gram seed cost in Pune?

SAGreens sells organic green gram seeds at ₹69 for a 100g pack (MRP ₹89, 22% off), with same-day delivery across Pune including Keshav Nagar, Koregaon Park, Baner, Hinjewadi, Kothrud and Hadapsar. Free shipping on orders above ₹499.
