Health Benefits
- •Organic and non-GMO
- •Mild and crisp — one of the gentlest microgreens to eat
- •Grows well on a tray or without soil
- •Works for both microgreens and sprouting
How to Grow
- Store in a cool, dry place until ready to use
- No pre-soaking needed when growing on a tray
- Sow thinly — the seed is very small and clumps when sown heavy
- Harvest at 7–10 days, once the first true leaves show
Germination tips for microgreens
- •Sow thinly. Alfalfa seed is tiny, and a heavy sowing mats together and traps moisture underneath, which is where slime starts.
- •No pre-soak on a tray — the seed takes moisture from damp cocopeat on its own. Soaking is for sprouting in a jar, which is a different method.
- •Keep the tray in blackout for 2–3 days so the stems push upward rather than sideways.
- •Bottom water once sprouted. Misting flattens seedlings this small and leaves water sitting on the leaves.
- •Give it airflow. Alfalfa is denser than most trays and needs air moving over it, particularly through the monsoon.
- •Ready at 7–10 days, once the first true leaves appear above the cotyledons.
- •Flavour is mild, crisp and faintly sweet — good in salads and sandwiches where a peppery green would take over.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much do alfalfa microgreen seeds cost?
₹140 for a 100g pack. Alfalfa seed is very small, so a pack goes a long way — sow thinly and 100g covers a good number of trays. Delivery is charged at checkout by order weight.
Can I use these seeds for sprouting as well as microgreens?
Yes, alfalfa works both ways. Sprouting is done in a jar with regular rinsing and you eat the whole seedling including the root. As a microgreen it is grown on a tray and cut above the medium. The seed is the same; the method and the handling differ.
Do alfalfa seeds need soaking?
Not on a tray. The seed is small enough to take up moisture from damp cocopeat on its own. Soaking belongs to the jar-sprouting method, where seed is soaked for a few hours before draining and rinsing.
How long do alfalfa microgreens take to grow?
Seven to ten days on a tray, harvested once the first true leaves appear above the cotyledons. It is one of the quicker varieties, and the flavour stays mild rather than sharpening with age the way mustard does.
Why did my alfalfa tray go slimy?
Almost always sowing too heavily. Alfalfa seed is tiny, and a dense sowing mats together and traps moisture underneath where air cannot reach. Sow thinner than feels right, bottom water rather than misting, and keep air moving over the tray.
