Microgreen Seeds Supplier for Indian Growers and Businesses

Seed is rarely the biggest line in a microgreen operation, but it is the one growers scrutinise hardest, usually because it is the easiest to compare between suppliers. It is worth doing the arithmetic properly, because the cheapest seed per kilogram is frequently not the cheapest seed per tray.

Seed per tray varies enormously by variety. Small seed like radish, mustard and broccoli needs 8 to 12g for a standard 25cm × 25cm tray. Large seed like sunflower and pea shoots needs 20 to 30g for the same tray. That is a factor of three before price enters the picture, which is why a per-kilogram comparison between varieties tells you nothing useful.

Germination rate is a price multiplier. Seed at 70 percent germination is not 30 percent worse than seed at 95 percent — it is worse than that, because a patchy tray is not a partial harvest. Gaps in the mat mean uneven airflow, which means mould risk, and a tray that has to be discarded costs you the seed, the medium, the tray time and the customer order. A supplier who cannot state a germination figure is asking you to carry that risk for them.

Work out your monthly need before asking for a quote. Trays per week × seed per tray × 4.3 gives your monthly volume per variety. A grower running 50 trays a week of mixed small-seed varieties uses roughly 1 to 1.2kg a month, which sits in our 1kg tier. Send us that number rather than asking for a rate card and the quote will be far more useful.

Every grower who has been at this for a year has a story about a cheap seed lot. The failures cluster into four kinds, and all four are more expensive than the saving.

Treated seed that cannot legally be sold as food. Most seed sold through Indian nurseries and agri-input shops is field-grade stock dressed with fungicide and dyed a vivid pink, red or blue precisely so it cannot be mistaken for food. It germinates fine. It is also not safe to sprout, juice or sell as a raw crop, and if you are supplying restaurants or a juice bar, that is not a risk to take on price. Everything we supply is untreated and undyed for exactly this reason.

Lots that do not match order to order. This is the complaint we hear most often about seed wholesalers in India, and it is the hardest to detect before it bites. A supplier buying opportunistically from whatever is available that week will send you a different sourcing each time, and your sowing density, blackout timing and yield all shift underneath you. Reserving stock against a known cycle is the only real fix, which is what we do for repeat accounts.

Old seed sold without a harvest date. Seed viability drifts down slowly and invisibly. Small seed like radish and broccoli holds for two to three years stored properly; larger seed less. Germination figures copied from a datasheet. A number on a supplier's website is not a test of the seed in your sack. We germination-test each incoming lot on damp tissue before packing, which is a cheap and slow process that is nonetheless the only way to know. It is also why our figures are stated as ranges by variety rather than one confident number for everything.

The practical defence, whoever you buy from: take a retail pack first, sow it in your own water, medium and climate, and count what comes up. Growing conditions vary more between Indian cities than any supplier's datasheet admits, and a lot that performs beautifully in Pune can disappoint in coastal Kochi humidity. Volume seed goes to four kinds of buyer in India, and what each needs from a supplier differs more than you would expect.

Commercial microgreen farms. The largest share of our wholesale volume. These growers run 50 to 300 trays a week and care about two things above all: lot consistency, so their production schedule holds, and turnaround, so a delayed dispatch does not empty a shelf. Typical orders are 1 to 5kg a month across three to six varieties, weighted heavily toward radish, mustard, sunflower and pea shoots. Juice bars, gyms and wellness centres. Almost entirely wheatgrass, and increasingly Khapli wheat for the sweeter grass. Volume is high and variety count is low, which makes these the simplest accounts to hold stock for. Reckon on 150 to 200g of seed per tray and a tray every two to three days for steady service.

Nurseries and garden retailers reselling into the home-growing market. These buyers want small packs they can shelf, a germination figure they can print on a label, and consistency so their own customers do not complain. We supply in bulk for repacking, or in our retail packs at trade rates.

Schools, institutions and CSR programmes. Microgreens are a genuinely good teaching crop — a full germination-to-harvest cycle inside a school term, no specialist equipment, and something children can eat at the end of it. These orders are usually one-off and variety-light, weighted toward the fastest and most forgiving crops. Radish is the right answer almost every time.

What we will tell you honestly: if you are ordering under 500g, retail packs on the seed catalogue are cheaper than anything we could quote you, and we will say so rather than dress a retail order up as wholesale. If a variety is genuinely difficult in your climate, we will say that too — coriander is slow and fussy everywhere in India, and no supplier's seed changes that.
