What Actually Degrades Seed
Four things, in order of how much damage they do in Indian conditions.
Moisture
By a wide margin the biggest factor. Seed absorbs atmospheric moisture, which raises its internal water content and accelerates respiration. Above roughly 12% internal moisture, deterioration becomes rapid, and fungal growth becomes possible.
This is why monsoon is the dangerous season rather than summer. A sealed packet survives 40-degree heat far better than an open one survives 85% humidity.
Heat
Warmth speeds every chemical process inside the seed. The rough rule used by seed banks is that each 5-degree reduction in storage temperature roughly doubles storage life. A cupboard beside the stove is among the worst places in an Indian kitchen.
Light
Less important than the first two but not irrelevant. Light degrades some compounds in the seed coat and, more practically, a transparent container on a sunny shelf gets warm. Opaque or shaded storage is better.
Air
Oxygen drives the oxidation that degrades oils, which is why sunflower and coriander age faster than radish. Airtight containers help most with oily seed.
How to Store Microgreen Seed at Home
The method is simple and cheap.
Keep it airtight. A screw-top glass jar, a well-sealed plastic container, or the original packet inside a sealed container. Zip bags are acceptable but not as good — they admit humidity over months.
Keep it cool. The coolest, most temperature-stable part of the house. That usually means an interior cupboard rather than one on an outside wall, and never above or beside the stove.
Keep it dark. An opaque container, or a clear one kept inside a cupboard.
Keep it dry. A silica gel sachet in the container makes a genuine difference during monsoon. The sachets that arrive in shoe boxes and electronics packaging work perfectly well — dry them in a low oven occasionally to recharge them.
Label it. Write the variety and the date you opened it. Without a date you cannot interpret a thin tray, and you will end up blaming your method.
Monsoon rule: From June to September, do not leave seed packets open on a shelf. Decant into airtight containers with a silica sachet and open them as briefly as possible. More Indian seed is lost to one careless monsoon than to two years of ordinary storage.
Should You Refrigerate Microgreen Seed?
Refrigeration helps, but only if you do it properly, and done badly it is worse than a cupboard.
Cold storage slows respiration and extends viability substantially. Seed banks store at freezing temperatures for exactly this reason. The catch is condensation: cold seed brought into a warm humid Indian kitchen pulls moisture out of the air onto its surface immediately, and repeated cycles of that do more damage than never refrigerating at all.
If you refrigerate, follow two rules. Store in a genuinely airtight container, not a bag. And when you take it out, let the sealed container reach room temperature before opening it — twenty to thirty minutes.

Count out exactly ten seeds. Place them on a damp sheet of kitchen paper, fold it over, and seal it in a container at room temperature. Check after 48 hours, or up to a week for slow varieties like coriander and beetroot.

Signs Seed Has Gone Bad
Most degraded seed looks perfectly normal, which is why testing matters. But some signs are visible.
A musty or stale smell when you open the container means moisture has been present and fungal growth is likely. Discard it rather than sowing a crop you will eat raw.
Visible mould, clumping, or seed stuck together indicates the packet took on moisture. Clumped seed is a strong signal, because dry seed does not stick.
Discolouration, particularly darkening on oily seed like sunflower, suggests the oils have oxidised. Germination will be poor.
Insects or fine powder at the bottom of the container mean storage pests. Discard the batch — this is common in Indian kitchens where seed shares a cupboard with grains.
Buy the Quantity You Will Actually Use
The commonest false economy in microgreen growing is buying a large pack because the per-gram price is lower, then sowing the second half at 60% germination a year later.

Storage for Commercial and Bulk Growers
Growers holding kilograms rather than grams face a different problem, and several of our customers across Pune, Mumbai and Bengaluru run into the same issues.
Decant into working quantities. Opening a 5kg sack weekly exposes the whole batch to humid air every time. Split it into sealed one-kilogram containers and open only the one in use.
Track batches by date and germination rate. If you know a batch tests at 92% rather than 96%, you can raise seeding density to compensate rather than discovering a thin tray on harvest day.
Store off the floor and away from outside walls, both of which carry moisture during monsoon.
Rotate strictly, oldest first. It sounds obvious and is the thing most often neglected once several batches are open at once.

Coastal growers have the hardest job and the most to gain from doing this properly. In Mumbai or Kochi, ambient humidity rarely drops far enough for a paper packet to be safe at any time of year, so decanting into sealed containers is not a monsoon-only measure.
Growers in Delhi and the dry north face the opposite problem. Humidity is manageable but summer heat is extreme, and a cupboard on a west-facing wall can exceed 45 degrees in May. An interior cupboard makes more difference there than any desiccant.
If you do one thing: Decant seed out of its paper packet into an airtight container on the day it arrives, and write the date on it. That single habit prevents most of the viability loss described in this guide, and costs nothing.
Common Storage Mistakes
Leaving seed in the paper packet it arrived in. Paper breathes, which is exactly what you do not want. Packets are for shipping, not storage.
Storing seed above the stove. The warmest and most humid spot in an Indian kitchen, and a surprisingly common choice because the cupboard is convenient.
Refrigerating without an airtight container. Every time you open a cold bag in a warm kitchen, moisture condenses on the seed. Done repeatedly this is worse than never refrigerating.
Keeping seed in the same cupboard as flour and grains. Storage pests move between them readily, and an infestation in the atta will find the seed.
Buying a year's supply to save money. The saving disappears when the last third germinates at 60 percent.
Not labelling anything. Without an open date, a thin tray tells you nothing. You cannot separate a storage problem from a technique problem, so you end up adjusting the wrong variable.
